Serving the families of Lake Forest and beyond, Hillside’s Montessori toddler program is designed to meet the developmental needs of very young children and to support their natural growth. In order to learn, we believe young students need to move and explore in a safe environment. At 24-36 months, children are in the parallel play stage, so while they enjoy being around others, they do not naturally engage in group activities. Toddlers absorb information via sight, sound, smell, texture, and taste, even without formal lessons. We took these factors into account while designing our learning space, which encourages children to take on self-directed, individual activities with little or no intervention from the adults in the room.
Montessori Learning – Activities:
Hands-on learning materials are placed in sequence throughout our beautiful, spacious classrooms and garden areas to enhance your toddler’s ability to be independent, to use fine and gross motor skills, to recognize sensory impressions, and to improve language and cognitive skills. They use manipulative materials which demonstrate cause and effect relationships and one-to-one correspondence.
We encourage children to use language to express their needs and to begin to understand others. Developmental art, music, and rhythm lessons are offered throughout the day. The activities of Practical Life encourage your child’s independence regarding caring for themselves and their surroundings. We teach children the lessons of grace and courtesy, which sets our Montessori program apart from others. By adult example, children learn appropriate, respectful actions and words to use with the people around them.
